October 12, was our first day dancing together. It was amazing. We learned about Merce Cunningham's Chance Dance choreographic process (see lesson plans tab). We used 10 different movements and put them together as a class to make a Secret Spy Chance Dance. Some students had great facial expressions and others had very unique and creative shapes. We then created our own Chance Dance dances. One of the best parts was seeing how the dances worked with our chance music. Some of the dances matched the unknown music and some were in opposition. To conclude our lesson, we talked about how some people are more random and some people are more methodical. We identified some students in the classroom that were more one way or the other. We discussed why it is good to have both kinds of people in the world and how both can be strengths. It was a great introduction to Chance Dance, Merce Cunningham, and different kinds of thought processes.
Here we are trying movements on different levels and with different body parts.
Here are the students working on their own choreography in groups.
