Dependent Clauses and Subordinating Conjunctions

On October 29th, we had a fun Halloween themed lesson (see lesson plans tab).  We used a character called an AAWUBBIS as our friend to help teach us about subordinating conjunctions.  We learned a dance position for each word in the acronym AAWUBBIS (after, as, when, until, before, because, if, and since).  We used these positions at the beginning of sentences.  While speaking a sentence we began in one of the designated AAWUBBIS shapes, stretched the shape during the dependent clause, sucked ourselves up a straw at the comma, and finally collapsed on the ground for the independent part of the sentence.  It was very fun and the Halloween sentences made it all the more festive. Groups performed sentences and we had to guess what AAWUBBIS word they used in the sentence. To conclude the day, the dancers made up their own Halloween dance sentences and appropriately placed the comma in the sentence.  The dances were fun to watch, and it was also fulfilling to see how well they knew their subordinating conjunctions and where to put the comma in the sentence.
